This calculator gives a simple annual-value and payback estimate for a solar panel installation. It is best used before or after getting quotes, when you want to test how system size, export rate, electricity price, and self-use change the result.
A 4 kW system generating 850 kWh per kW produces about 3,400 kWh per year. If 45% is used at home at 28p per kWh, that self-used energy is worth about £428. Exporting the rest at 15p per kWh is worth about £281. After a £100 maintenance allowance, the net annual benefit is about £609.
Electricity used in the property usually replaces imported electricity at your import unit rate. Exported electricity is valued at the export rate, which may be lower, so the self-use percentage can strongly affect payback.
Not directly. A battery can increase self-use, but it also adds cost and has its own efficiency and lifespan. You can test the effect by changing the self-use percentage, but treat that as a simplified estimate.
It assumes the same annual benefit every year. Real systems may have changing tariffs, component replacement, panel degradation, export rule changes, and different maintenance costs over time.
